HALE, Edward Everett (1822-1909), Autograph Quotation Signed
HALE, Edward Everett (1822-1909)
Autograph Quotation Signed
This Unitarian clergyman wrote a number of volumes and served as chaplain of the U.S. Senate, among various distinguished posts, but would not be remembered today were it not for one short story first published in 1863 -- "The Man Without a Country." AQS, 4½" X 2½", n.p. n.y. Very good. Moderately age toned, with right edge a bit chipped. Hale pens a quotation from Phillipians (3:13-14): "Forgetting those things that / are behind, -- and reaching / forth unto those things which / are before," signing boldly below. This has been simply framed against black matte in a 9" X 7" black picture frame, with brass plaque affixed to lower edge on which is engraved: "Edward E. Hale / Author / 'The Man Without a / Country.'" When asked to pen a sentiment, Hale most often wrote "Look up and not down; Look forward and not back; Look out and not in; - Lend a Hand!" but this Phillipians Biblical passage is seen far less frequently. .

For Our Boys: A Collection of Original Literary Offerings by Popular Writers at Home and Abroad
San Francisco, A. L. Bancroft and Company, 1879. First edition. Cloth. A charming collection of sketches, essays and poems, compiled to raise funds for the San Francisco Youths' Directory. The first edition of this scarce work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with pictorial gilt to the front board and spine. An interesting collection of original sketches, stories, essays, short memoirs and poems by popular authors including Joaquin Miller, Charles Warren Stoddard, Victor Hugo, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Rev. Edward Everett Hale, and many more. It was edited by Ambrose P. Dietz. This work was published and sold for the Youths' Directory of San Francisco, "a benevolent institution for friendless boys". This organisation provided food and shelter for homeless boys in San Francisco, encouraging them out of crime and towards education and employment. This work, which was created to raise funds for the Youths' Directory, contains original contributions which have not been printed elsewhere, such as Robert Ferral's Our Camp in '64 and John S. Hittell's Mining Life in Shasta in 1849. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with light shelf wear to the extremities and the odd mark to the boards. Boards are a little warped. Hinges are starting but remain firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a light tide mark to the head of the occasional page. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .
